Energy Efficiency

Outside of your mortgage, your monthly utility bill is more than likely the most expensive cost associated with your home. By making your home more energy efficient you will lower your energy bills, create a more comfortable home, and decrease your energy consumption. Visit the sections to the left to learn more about how your home uses energy and what you can do to reduce the energy you use.

There are three steps to decreasing your energy consumption.

  1. Energy Conservation. This is about changing your behavior to use less energy. This is turning off the lights, letting your dishes air dry, and not washing your clothes in hot water.
  2. Energy Efficiency. This is more about building science and the appliances in your home. This is weatherizing your home to keep heated air indoors, buying ENERGY STAR products, and increasing your insulation levels. The pages to the left discuss all the various factors that affect your home's energy efficiency and what you can do to make it better.
  3. Renewable Energy. This is utilizing a renewable energy source, such as the sun or wind, to get your energy. It is crucial to realize that to maximize your return on renewable energy, you need to begin with an energy efficient structure. Consider energy efficiency to be the vegetables on your plate, and renewable energy the dessert. You shouldn't jump right into desert until you've eaten your veggies.
